History of Beringharjo Market Establishment
The Beringharjo market area was originally a banyan forest. [4] Not long after the founding of the Yogyakarta Sultanate in 1758 , this market area became a place ofeconomic transactions by the people of Yogyakarta and surrounding areas. [5] Hundreds of years later on March 24, 1925, the Yogyakarta Palace commissioned Nederlansch Indisch Beton Maatschappij (Dutch Indies Concrete Company) to build market stalls . [1] By the end of August 1925, 11 kiosks had been completed and others gradually followed. [4]
The name Beringharjo was given after the throne of Sultan Hamengku Buwono VIII on March 24, 1925. Sri Sultan Hamngku Buwono VIII ordered that all agenciesunder the auspices of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta using the Java language . [1] The name Beringharjo was chosen because it has the meaning of the original forest area bering ( bering ) which is expected to provide prosperity ( harjo ). [1] The name Beringharjo itself is judged precisely because the market location is a former banyan forest and the banyan tree is a symbol of greatness and shelter for many people. [1]
Beringharjo market has historical and philosophical value with Kraton Yogyakarta because it has passed three phases, namely the period of empire , colonialism , andindependence . [1] Beringharjo Market Development is one part of the design of urban planning pattern of Sultanate of Yogyakarta called Catur Tunggal . [1] The pattern of this city plan includes four things namely the palace as the center of government, the square as a public space, the mosque as a place of worship, and the market as the center of economic transactions.
